Barcelona’s dreams of a historic treble came to a painful end at the Guiseppe Meazza, as Inter Milan edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3 after extra time to book their spot in the Champions League final.
Despite a spirited comeback that mirrored the first leg, it was the Italian giants who prevailed, leaving the Blaugrana faithful heartbroken.
Just like at the Camp Nou, Inter raced into a two-goal lead, capitalising on Barcelona’s shaky start. Lautaro Martínez struck first in the 21st minute before Hakan Calhanoglu made it 2-0 from the spot after Pau Cubarsí’s late challenge on Martínez was confirmed by VAR.
But Barcelona, led by the tactical nous of Hansi Flick and the relentless spirit of their players, clawed their way back. Eric Garcia sparked the revival with a thunderous volley from Gerard Martín’s cross, and just minutes later, Dani Olmo powered home a header—again from a Martín delivery—to bring parity. When Raphinha’s fierce strike squirmed past Yann Sommer to make it 3-2, it felt like destiny was finally favouring Barça.
Yet, Inter were far from done. The atmosphere inside the Meazza roared to life, pushing the Nerazzurri forward. Francesco Acerbi stabbed home a Dumfries cross to level the tie once again, sending the match into extra time.
There, the final blow came. In the 112th minute, Marcus Thuram’s inch-perfect cross was met by Davide Frattesi, whose sublime finish curled beyond Szczesny. Barça pushed desperately in the dying moments, but Inter held firm, crushing Catalan hopes.
This was a tie that showcased the very best and worst of Barcelona’s season—moments of brilliance, flashes of frailty, and an all-too-familiar tale of falling short at the final hurdle. For a young team still under construction, this loss will sting, but it also offers a foundation to build upon.
The dream ends in Milan, but the journey is far from over.
