Valladolid head coach Alvaro Rubio has expressed pride in his team’s performance despite falling to a 2-1 loss against Barcelona on Saturday.

Rubio’s side took an early lead and held firm for much of the first half, causing problems for Hansi Flick’s team before eventually being undone in the second period. Speaking to DAZN after the match, the manager praised his players for following the game plan.

“We had a very good first half,” said Rubio. “The players executed the plan perfectly. Once you get into the match and realise you have a chance, you gain confidence and everything feels easier. It’s a shame because we played well enough to have taken more from the game.”

With the season nearing its end, Rubio believes the remaining matches present a key opportunity for his squad. “We work a lot with the players, both collectively and individually. Right now, it’s a great opportunity for them. Many will be able to show that they can compete at this level,” he added.

Asked about how Valladolid managed to trouble Barcelona, Rubio pointed to the importance of organisation and quick transitions. “They’re a side that constantly applies pressure. You have to close the spaces inside because their movement is excellent. And when you win the ball, you have to break quickly — their counter-pressing is very strong, so the first two passes are key.”
