Worrying reports have emerged from Germany suggesting FC Barcelona’s agreement to sign Jonathan Tah could be in jeopardy, with Manchester United reportedly attempting to capitalize on the Blaugrana’s ongoing financial and registration difficulties.
According to Sky Sports Germany and reporter Florian Plettenberg, the 29-year-old German international centre-back had already reached an agreement to join Hansi Flick’s Barcelona squad on a free transfer when his contract with Bayer Leverkusen expires at the end of the current season. Tah has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s success over recent years and boasts 35 caps for the German national team, making him a coveted defensive reinforcement.

However, the move, which seemed secured, is now facing a significant obstacle. Plettenberg reports, “All doors are open! …the Catalans are still having problems registering the player for the coming season.” This uncertainty has alerted rivals, with the report explicitly stating, “Now, Manchester United are reaching out to Tah.”
The inability to guarantee Tah’s registration for the upcoming campaign due to La Liga’s financial regulations has potentially reopened negotiations that Barcelona believed were concluded. This situation is particularly frustrating given Tah’s quality and the fact he was set to arrive without a transfer fee.
Adding to Barcelona’s concerns, Manchester United aren’t the only club monitoring the situation. Bayern Munich are also reportedly interested in keeping the experienced defender in the Bundesliga.
While Barcelona scrambles to resolve its registration issues, Tah still has commitments with Bayer Leverkusen. He is expected to feature this Sunday against Freiburg, with matches against Borussia Dortmund and Mainz also remaining before the end of their campaign, where Xabi Alonso’s side looks set to relinquish their league title to Bayern Munich, according to the reports.
This development serves as a stark reminder of the challenges Barcelona faces off the pitch. Fans will be anxiously hoping the club can resolve its registration problems swiftly to secure Tah’s arrival and prevent rivals, particularly Manchester United, from hijacking a crucial signing.
