The tension between Real Madrid and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has reached new heights ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona.
Real Madrid had formally requested a change of referees for the final at La Cartuja stadium, expressing concerns over the appointment of Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea and Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes.
The club’s concerns stem from the referees’ recent press conference, where they openly criticised the backlash they faced — much of it linked to Real Madrid Television’s coverage of controversial decisions.
However, the RFEF has firmly rejected Madrid’s request, confirming to Cadena SER that there is “no possibility” of replacing the officiating team. Federation sources stated bluntly: “There is no reason for it, no matter what Real Madrid say.”
This refusal has only fuelled the already simmering tensions between the club and the federation, adding even more drama to what is already a fiercely anticipated El Clásico final.
As emotions boil over and controversy swirls, one thing is clear: Saturday’s final will be played under a cloud of suspicion and mistrust. Whether this galvanises Carlo Ancelotti’s men or adds unnecessary pressure remains to be seen.
For Barcelona, the Blaugrana will be aiming to silence Real Madrid with another comprehensive victory.
