As the Copa del Rey final looms large, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has dropped what many fans are interpreting as a classic case of pre-match mind games — or perhaps a rare moment of humility.
Following Los Blancos’ hard-fought victory over Getafe, Ancelotti was asked about the challenge ahead, and his response raised eyebrows across Spain.
“Barca favourites on Saturday? It could be, but finals are finals. Anything can happen,” Ancelotti said, offering a dose of both realism and hope.
Whether it was tactical psychology or a genuine nod to the difficulties of the season, the Italian tactician’s remarks have sparked a buzz in the Madridista community. After all, it’s not every day the manager of Real Madrid admits to being second-favourite in a domestic final — especially against bitter rivals Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Barça boss Hansi Flick has stated his desire to beat Madrid in the remaining two ties between the two sides – in the Copa del Rey final and La Liga.
“Barça and Madrid are two of the best teams, so naturally the biggest trophies are decided between us,” Flick said.
“We still have two matches against them and we want to win both La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
“It won’t be easy, but our focus is clear—we have to beat them.”
