Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has offered an explanation for his decision to leave Barcelona star Gavi out of his latest squad selection.
The latest Spain squad was announced last week, featuring a strong Barcelona presence. No fewer than seven Blaugrana players were called up, highlighting the club’s influence on La Roja.
However, Gavi was a notable absentee, and when questioned about his omission during a press conference, De la Fuente pointed to the intense competition for places in his squad as the primary reason.
He said: “There are more players who could be there than those who are. Gavi demonstrates the strength of Spanish football, as does Isco. Unfortunately, they are not here, but they are there. They will have the opportunity if we need them. This list is the best that can be made.”
Despite his absence this time, the Barcelona midfielder remains firmly in contention for future call-ups, as De la Fuente emphasised that no door is closed.
