Barcelona’s long-standing interest in Nico Williams hit a dead end last summer as the Athletic Bilbao star turned down a move to Camp Nou in favor of staying at San Mamés. The Spain international, who was expected to leave after helping La Roja win the Euros, has now revealed why he rejected offers from both Barcelona and Arsenal.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Williams admitted that both clubs made concrete proposals, but his deep connection with Athletic Club ultimately influenced his decision to stay.

“This relationship we have at the heart of the club is incredible,” Williams said. “Everyone respects everyone else, which is incredible. This atmosphere, I’ll never have it anywhere else. I decided to stay because of that.”

Barcelona saw Williams as a long-term solution for their attack, with his explosive pace and dribbling ability making him a perfect fit for Hansi Flick’s system. However, despite their efforts, the 22-year-old winger opted to extend his contract with Bilbao instead.

While many expected him to take the next step in his career with a move to a European giant, Williams insists that his choice was not about rejecting a bigger challenge but about loyalty and happiness.

“I took the decision I thought was the right one. I’m happy, and I’m trying to do my best,” he added.
