Barcelona cruised to a 4-0 victory over 10-man Real Sociedad, reclaiming the top spot in La Liga and dealing another frustrating blow to Real Madrid’s title hopes.

Hansi Flick’s side now hold a one-point lead over Atletico Madrid and sit three points ahead of Los Blancos, who suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Real Betis on Saturday.

La Real thought they had an early breakthrough when Sergio Gomez found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up. Any hopes of a competitive match quickly faded when Aritz Elustondo saw red for a professional foul on Dani Olmo, leaving the hosts with an uphill battle.

Barcelona took full advantage of their numerical superiority, although their goals came from unexpected sources. Martin opened the scoring with a stunning half-volley from Olmo’s chipped pass, before Marc Casado turned another Olmo effort into the net via the post.

The second half brought more misery for Imanol Alguacil’s men. Ronald Araujo marked his return with a close-range header after Robert Lewandowski’s shot was parried, before the Polish striker claimed his 21st league goal of the season when Araujo’s effort deflected in off his boot.

Flick was able to rotate his squad ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 trip to Benfica, while Real Madrid fans will be left hoping their rivals slip up soon to keep the title race alive.

As it stands, Barcelona top the league with 57 points, Atletico follow with 56 points and Real Madrid are third with 54 points.
