Benfica coach Bruno Lage praised Barcelona ahead of their Champions League clash, calling Barca a “very competent” opponent.
Speaking at a press conference at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Lage shared his thoughts on the challenges his team will face on Tuesday.
Lage acknowledged Barcelona’s status as strong contenders for the Champions League title, highlighting their exceptional quality.
“It is a team with enormous quality, both in individual terms with fantastic players, like us, and then in collective terms,” the Benfica coach stated.
He emphasised the blend of Barcelona’s iconic DNA, centred on possession-based football, and the influence of their coach, Hansi Flick, who brings a more direct style focused on pressing and quick attacking transitions. “It is a team that likes to have possession,” Lage explained, adding that Flick’s tactical approach makes them even more dangerous. “For this reason, they are a very competent opponent, and we have to approach this challenge with great ambition.”
When asked about his tactical plans for the match, Lage revealed his team’s focus on finding solutions against Barcelona’s high defensive line. “For us, it is important to understand how to play with the ball in our midfield and how to execute in the offensive midfield,” he said. He also stressed the need to create problems for Barcelona’s defense, noting that his squad has been preparing specifically for this challenge.
Benfica, currently sitting 15th in the Champions League standings after a draw with Bologna, will be desperate for a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. Facing a team of Barcelona’s calibre will be a daunting task, but Lage and his team are ready to take on the challenge with determination.
