Pep Guardiola is highly reverred at Barcelona, but the current Man City manager has said it wasn’t always the case.

Pep Guardiola was appointed as Barcelona manager from the Barcelona team B in 2008, and he’d go on to achieve many great things.

Pep Guardiola has now revealed that he wasn’t really valued at the time of his appointment, as many doubted in his capability. Interestingly, Guardiola says he prefers it this way.

Pep Guardiola says: “When you arrive [at a club], everyone wants to knock you off the top (…) Some say it’s money, some it’s Lionel Messi and his teammates, some say Bayern always win.

“They tend to doubt the value, it’s normal. When you don’t win, they want to take away the importance. Rivals want to beat you, and the critics want to take away the value.

“They are sitting and watching you, but you are the one who works and can do it, not them. If I do badly, I go home. With my players, team and club, we have the desire to prove it.

“When I arrived at Barcelona, 86 per cent of people didn’t want me. I said: ‘Perfect’. It’s better to arrive like this than ‘ah, everything is perfect’. The step-by-step was to convince one person before going for another one. I prefer people to doubt me. This gives me incredible energy.”
