Barcelona suffer defeat after lacklustre Champions League display

Barcelona needed a win away against Shakhtar Donetsk to seal qualification from the Champions League group stage into the round of 16, but it wasn’t to be.

Barcelona dominated possession all through the game, but couldn’t create clear-cut chances.

The game took a different turn just before half-time as Danylo Sikan headed home for the hosts.

Barcelona tried to push for the leveller, but left gaps at the back which Shakhtar tried to exploit on the counter.

Xavi made a quadruple change just before the hour mark, as he brought on Pedri, Joao Felix, Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal. However, the changes didn’t have the desired effect.

Barcelona would lose the game 1-0 and pause the team’s qualification to the next round.
