Marc-Andre ter Stegen was in goal as Germany lost to Japan 4-1 in a friendly tie.

The Barca goalkeeper conceded all four goals, as the Germans lost on their own home turf.

Ilkay Gundogan who was named Germany’s Player of the Year also featured in the tie as captain.

When asked to explain the defeat and the team’s problems, Germany manager Hansi Flick responded: “We are really disappointed. You have to admit that Japan is a good team. We don’t have the tools right now to beat a defense like that. The team tried again and again, then there were individual mistakes, which Japan then exploited and deserved such a big win.”

“We were not in a position to beat a team like that. They have the basics down pat. We in German football have to wake up. It’s clear that the disappointment is huge. We’re disappointed too.”
