Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed his delight at being named Germany captain.

Gundogan led Germany in their friendly game against Japan.

He said before the game: “I am happy for the trust.

“It is a great honour for me and I am aware of the responsibility that I will have especially towards the younger ones.”

The decision was a surprise one, as many expected Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich to get the captain band.

Germany ended up losing the game 4-1.
