Lionel Messi wore the No. 10 jersey for Barcelona until his eventual departure in 2021.

Surprisingly, youngster Ansu Fati was given the jersey after the departure of the club legend.  

Fati wore the No.31 jersey in his debut season at the club and then the No.22 jersey after being promoted to the Barcelona first team.

In Barcelona’s documentary filmed by Prime Video, Ansu Fati revealed how he was shocked to be handed the shirt number vacated by Lionel Messi.

“I actually wanted the No.17. But with Leo’s departure and how all numbers needed to be filled, the club had offered me the No.10. I proceeded to ask the captains for permission and when they agreed, I was thrilled,” the forward said.

The 20-year-old has recorded 3 goals and 3 assists in 20 matches for Barcelona this season. He has managed 5 starts so far after recovering a bad injury last season.
