Barcelona reached an agreement for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window, but a move never happened.

De Jong refused to move to Old Trafford and was adamant on staying at the Camp Nou.

There were issues of wages and deferred payments between club and player as well.

De Jong ended up remaining at Barcelona, but it didn’t end there.

Reports from Cadena SER’s Adria Soldevila claims that Barcelona ‘will be ready to keep Frenkie de Jong beyond 2023’ only if he accepts a pay cut.

The 25-year-old is currently the team’s highest-paid player with a reported annual net fee of €18m.

According to reports, the player ‘has made a pact’ about it with Joan Laporta.

Despite previous reports,  Barcelona have agreed not to enter a legal dispute with De Jong.

Barcelona will only want to keep De Jong on the long-term if he negotiates a pay cut.

Meanwhile, speaking to NOS on international duty with Holland, De Jong revealed when and why he decided to stay at Barcelona.

He said: “I had already decided in May that I wanted to stay.

“So I was very calm myself. I now feel welcome at the club. Nothing has ever changed with my teammates.”
