Barcelona youngster Gavi has signed a new contract with the club until 2026.

Gavi’s deal has a €1bn (£865m) release clause, which highlights how much he’s valued by the club.

Academy product Gavi, has become a key part of Xavi’s team and has started every game for Barcelona this season. He also became Spain’s youngest goalscorer in June 2022, at 17 years and 304 days old.

For Barcelona president Joan Laporta, the deal is a historic one.

“Today is an historic day,” said Laporta.

“With Gavi we are renewing the present, the immediate present, and the future of Barca.”

Gavi made his first-team debut for Barca in August 2021, aged 17 years and 24 days, becoming the fourth-youngest player in the club’s history, and he has thanked the club for helping him.

“I try to take things as naturally as possible,” said Gavi.

“La Masia helped me a lot in that regard, as well as the team and the staff.

“I am very grateful to the chefs and the tutors (at the academy). Since I was small they showed me how to work and to be humble.”
