According to The Times, Barcelona are among four clubs who could be seriously sanctioned by UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations during the 2020/21 season.
Barcelona had a massive wage bill and spent €112m in the 2020 summer transfer window during the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
In October 2020, Bartomeu resigned his Barcelona presidency following allegations of tax fraud and the Burofax scandal.
Barcelona would now have to face FFP issues with UEFA, and likes of Inter Milan, Roma and Juventus have also been named as teams who could face stiff punishment.
PSG, who also breached FFP rules, were given three years to sort out their books without risks of sanctions.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been working hard to remedy the club’s situation.
Back in May, Laporta slammed the La Liga FFP and was quoted calling La Liga’s FFP rules a “hindrance”, claiming it is much tougher than other top footballing countries in Europe.
However, La Liga president Javier Tebas hit back at Laporta for his comments on FFP, and criticised the Barcelona president for talking ill of the FFP rules which he believes were same for everyone.
“Laporta’s comments on the financial fairplay? I did not like it. If it were easier, teams could do whatever they want. I am hurt by these comments because they think that we do favors to some teams in La Liga, which is wrong,” said Tebas (h/t Leonoticias)
