Xavi Hernandez decided to start centre-back Ronald Araujo as a right-back against Rayo Vallecano, and the defender didn’t seem like he fitted in that role.
Surprisingly, Xavi opted to drop Sergino Dest from the first matchday squad of the season.
Reports have it that Xavi would rely on Araujo and summer signing Jules Kounde to cover the right-back position if Barcelona end up not bringing a new right-back signing.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Kounde has communicated to Xavi that he does not wish to play as a right-back.
Kounde was not part of the squad for Barcelona’s league opener as he was yet to be registered for the new season. He’s the only player that’s left to be registered.
Barcelona vice president Rafael Yuste has revealed he explained the situation to Kounde who was keen to play against Rayo Vallecano.
“Kounde wanted to play today, but we explained the situation and told him that we’ll do everything possible for him to play next weekend,” Yuste said after the game.
