Barcelona played out a goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou over the weekend.
For all of Barcelona’s pressure and domination of the ball, Xavi Hernandez side couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Star striker Robert Lewandowski was unable to bridge Rayo defence, and former Barca striker David Villa claimed it’s because all attention from Rayo Vallecano’s defence was on him.
“Lewandowski was the least dangerous player in attack today because Rayo’s defensive system was focused on him,” David Villa said while on pundit duty with DAZN.
“As a Barcelona fan, now I have great hope for the team again.
“The beginnings are always difficult, especially when there are new players, but in general FC Barcelona’s performance was good, only lacking in effectiveness.”
Speaking after the game, Xavi said he was happy with the striker’s performance and backed him to get back to his goalscoring ways soon.
He said: “I am happy with Lewandowski’s performance. He’s working for the team.
“Robert and everyone else was frustrated with the result, but we have to keep working. It’s a matter of time for Lewandowski to start scoring goals.”
