With Barcelona trying to solve the club’s financial issues, the club has made a move to lower its wage bill.

According to Cat Radio and Diario Sport, Gerard Pique has agreed to cancel his current contract and sign a new one with lower wages.

Barcelona’s lawyers have found ‘signs of criminality’ in the deals given in 2020 when Bartomeu was in charge.

According to reports, the likes of Pique, De Jong, Ter Stegen and Lenglet have been asked to void their current deals and revert to the old ones.

So far, only Gerard Pique has agreed to take a pay cut.

According to Spanish reporter Gerard Romero, lowering of wages would help Barcelona register new signings.

Barcelona made massive signings during the summer transfer window despite the club’s financial situation.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has however insisted he knows what he’s doing.

“I’m not a gambler. I take calculated risks,” he said in an interview with the New York Times.

“That’s been a decision that in honesty I didn’t want to do,” he commented on the sale of club’s assets such as TV rights and Barca Studios.

“In my time we put the expectations very high and we were successful,” Laporta added, referencing his previous tenure as a president.

“And then the Barça fans around the world, around 400 million fans worldwide, they require a level of success.”
