Barcelona shocked the world, as the Blaugrana were able to sign many top players this summer, despite talks of financial crisis at the club.
Barcelona had to activate three economic ‘levers’ to be able to sign players such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde.
Some have claimed that Joan Laporta is mortgaging the club’s future for immediate success, and think that the move will come back to haunt Barcelona in future.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has insisted he knows what he’s doing.
“I’m not a gambler. I take calculated risks,” he said in an interview with the New York Times.
“That’s been a decision that in honesty I didn’t want to do,” he commented on the sale of club’s assets such as TV rights and Barca Studios.
“In my time we put the expectations very high and we were successful,” Laporta added, referencing his previous tenure as a president.
“And then the Barça fans around the world, around 400 million fans worldwide, they require a level of success.”
