Chelsea were seemingly close to signing Jules Kounde from Sevilla, but Barcelona have now hijacked the deal for the France international.
Barcelona have well invested in the squad this summer, and Chelsea have been on the receiving end, as Barcelona have hijacked two deals from the Blues, while also signing Andreas Christensen on a free transfer.
Xavi was asked about his side’s chances of convincing Kounde to join Barcelona.
“Koundé? I feel bad, but I still can’t say anything,” the Spaniard explained in a press conference during Barcelona’s pre-season tour the United States.
“The club is working to keep improving and have more competition [in central defence]. If there is something official, we will say it.”
Xavi also explained that that he has been involved in the transfer dealings, and he tells the players his plans for them, which makes them leave other clubs to come to Barcelona.
“I get involved [in transfers] because I want them to come,” he said.
“I talk about the greatness of the club, the plan for the player… Everything adds up. We are Barça and people are excited. This year the word is illusion, illusion of returning to the top.”
