Manchester United new boss Erik ten Hag had made the signing of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong a priority.
However, Chelsea are looking to make a move for the Barcelona star.
According to Spanish transfer expert Gerard Romero, Chelsea have submitted an irresistible bid to Barcelona for Manchester United transfer target De Jong.
Manchester United and Barcelona have reached an agreement on the value of De Jong’s transfer but both clubs are yet to reach an agreement on the structure of the transfer.
According to transfer expert Gerard Romero, Manchester United’s last offer for De Jong is €65million guaranteed plus €22million in add-ons.
Barcelona want €75million guaranteed from Manchester United plus €12million in add-ons.
Barcelona want a bulk of the transfer to be paid now so they can reinvest the funds into their squad this summer and Chelsea are willing to do just that.
With Manchester United delaying to seal the deal for De Jong, Chelsea have now moved to hijack the deal.
Chelsea are also offering Barcelona two players that the Spanish club are keen on signing this summer – Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.
According to reports, Chelsea appear confident they can sign De Jong as they will offer the midfielder the opportunity to play in the Champions League – something Manchester United cannot offer at this moment.
However, Manchester United are hoping the good relationship between De Jong and Erik ten Hag could still give the Red Devils the edge over Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Barcelona president Joan Laporta had claimed last week that he had no intention of selling De Jong.
Speaking on De Jong’s future as a Barcelona player, Laporta said, as per Barcelona reporter Reshad Raman: “There are clubs that want him, not just United. We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay.
“Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him.
“I’m going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted.”
