According to reports, Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay has been told he’s not in head coach Xavi’s plans for the 2022-23 season.
Memphis Depay joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Lyon last summer and scored 13 goals and two assists for the Blaugrana in 38 appearances across all tournaments.
The Dutchman wasn’t a key part of Xavi’s starting team, especially after the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres.
Depay also struggled with Achilles and hamstring injuries for most part of last season. The 28-year-old only played one full 90 minutes La Liga game in the second half of last season.
Having signed a two-year contract with the club, Depay now has a year left on his deal.
According to Marca, Depay has been told that he is not part of Xavi’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
Meanwhile, Depay has claimed he is happy at Barcelona and wants to stay with the club after the end of his summer holiday.
“I really want to be back in Barcelona and start again, I can’t wait for that moment,” as per reports from ESPN, via Marca.
“But, I’m also going to relax with my feet in the sand somewhere, before I go back.”
Xavi is looking to work with young Spanish forwards Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati, and Ousmane Dembele may also sign a new contract with the club, while Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been linked to Barcelona as well.
This all means that Depay’s future at Nou Camp is far from certain.
