Manchester United were believed to be closing in on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong had maintained that he wasn’t interested in the move and wanted to stay at Barcelona.
Barcelona were keen on selling De Jong to balance the books due to the club’s financial situation.
Manchester United had agreed a fee earlier this week, and were expecting to wrap up a deal as the Netherlands international returned from his break.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the deal won’t be happening anymore.
Speaking on De Jong’s future as a Barcelona player, Laporta said, as per Barcelona reporter Reshad Raman: “There are clubs that want him, not just United. We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay.
“Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him.
“I’m going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted.”
Barcelona president Laporta seems to have made the u-turn on selling De Jong to Manchester United following Thursday’s injection of €200 million into the club’s coffers as a result of the sale of TV rights.
It also seems De Jong has agreed to adjust his salary to remain at Barcelona following the statement made by the Barcelona president.
This will be seen as good news to the Barcelona camp ahead of next season.
