Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona are trying to cash in on the Dutch international, as the club seeks funds to come out of a precarious financial situation.
According to reports, Manchester United have reached an initial agreement with Barcelona over a €65 million (£56m) fee plus add-ons for the Dutch midfielder.
Meanwhile, media outlet Sport, has claimed that De Jong could scupper Barca’s transfer plans as the midfielder has told both Barcelona and Manchester United that he has no intention of leaving this summer.
The report adds that De Jong is unhappy with Barca’s attempt to push him out of the club against his wish.
Speaking during the last international break, De Jong made known his preference in an interview with ESPN: “I prefer to stay with Barcelona.
“Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”
This also correlates with what former Barca boss Ronald Koeman said about De Jong.
According to Koeman, De Jong told him he wants to stay at Barcelona amid mounting speculation he is set to join Manchester United.
“The only thing I know is that Frenkie wants to continue at Barca,” Koeman told Esport 3.
“A couple of days ago he told me he wanted to continue. What I don’t know is if Barca wants to sell him or needs money because he is one of the few players for whom they can get a good amount.
“For me, De Jong is a great player for Barca.”
