Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona are trying to cash in on the Dutch international, as the club seeks funds to finance a deal.

Former Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has revealed what Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong told him about Manchester United transfer.

De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s priority signing this summer, as Ten Hag seeks to build the Manchester United team around the Barcelona midfielder.

Ten Hag worked with De Jong during their time together at Ajax and views the Holland international as essential to the brand of football he wishes to implement at Old Trafford.

Manchester United failed with an initial bid for De Jong but have now reportedly agreed a fee of €85million including add-ons with Barcelona.

Koeman still maintains a close relationship with De Jong, having coached the midfielder at Barcelona and also in international level with Holland.

According to Koeman, De Jong told him he wants to stay at Barcelona amid mounting speculation he is set to join Manchester United.

“The only thing I know is that Frenkie wants to continue at Barca,” Koeman told Esport 3.

“A couple of days ago he told me he wanted to continue. What I don’t know is if Barca wants to sell him or needs money because he is one of the few players for whom they can get a good amount.

“For me, De Jong is a great player for Barca.”
