Former Barcelona defender Ronald Koeman was appointed as Barcelona manager on August 19 2020.

Ronald Koeman signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2022, after taking over from Quique Setién who had also been axed by the club.

Koeman faced a lot of pressure under new president Joan Laporta, before he was eventually sacked last October, following a 1–0 away defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

His successor Xavi Hernandez, ended up restoring Barcelona’s fortunes, as Barca rose to a 2nd place finish.

Koeman has spoken about his time at the club and revealed what caused his downfall.

“The dressing room was never against me,” he said in an appearance on TV3.

“For me the problem started when the president changed.

“As a president you can always have your doubts about the coach, but not publicly. That was a big mistake from Laporta.”

He also said he felt free after leaving Nou Camp.

“It’s been a bit of a liberation to be free of being coach of Barça,” said Koeman.
